Voluntary associations are those associations into which people join voluntarily — that is, clubs or interest groups. Doctor Who fan clubs, for instance, are 'voluntary associations". Though there are many organisations which are technically "voluntary" — if one doesn't like one's job, one generally can quit, after all — "voluntary associations" are generally ones which center on hobbies or other activities unnecessary to the basic requirements of living.
