It could be caused by exposure to distronic explosives, which were usually used in explosive rockets. Near the end of the Thousand Year War on Skaro, the Thals developed a rocket with a distronic warhead to destroy the Kaled Dome. The Thals used an expendable slave labour force, including Sarah Jane Smith and Sevrin, to load the dangerous element into the warhead.
