A tie was an article of clothing commonly associated with men's apparel on the planet Earth. Ties were worn for their style value, but could also signal levels of formality,  association with particular schools, companies, or other groups. A tie was also favoured by the Doctor in most of his incarnations.
The Doctor's ties
The Doctor regularly wore a tie of some form in most, though not all, of their incarnations.

The Doctor
First Doctor
The First Doctor
The First Doctor almost always wore a wing collar with a navy blue ribbon bow tie. (TV: An Unearthly Child (TV story), The Daleks (TV story), The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)) On one occasion he wore an ascot tie that had a black-and-white checked pattern. (TV: The Rescue (TV story), The Web Planet (TV story)) He also wore a black cravat up to his death. (TV: The Tenth Planet (TV story), Twice Upon a Time (TV story))
The First Doctor almost always wore a wing collar with a bow tie, which took the form of a long, oblong piece of cloth tied in a large bow. It was almost always dark in colour, but on one occasion he wore a tie that had a black-and-white checked pattern. (DW: The Rescue)

On Vortis, the Doctor used a Coal Hill School tie belonging to Ian Chesterton to test an unknown liquid, finding it to be acid. Ian was momentarily more concerned about the loss of his tie than the fact that his life had just been saved. (DW: The Web Planet)
Second Doctor
The Second Doctor typically wore a small, pre-tied bow tie, attached to his shirt with a safety pin. It performed the function of closing the top of his shirt, in place of a collar button. (TV: The Power of the Daleks (TV story))

Fourth Doctor
The Third Doctor occasionally wore ties, favouring large, velvet butterfly-style bow ties to go with his distinctive velvet smoking jackets.

(TV: Robot (TV story) - Terror of the Zygons (TV story)) He also wore a dark teal ascot tie during his first encounters with Zygons and foiled their Skarasen gambit in Scotland. ===The Fourth Doctor===
Fifth Doctor
The Fourth Doctor sometimes wore a four-in-hand tie, but also often went tieless or wore a loose cravat or scarf.
The Fifth Doctor did not generally wear a tie, preferring to wear his shirt open-collared. On one occasion, however, he dressed in early European-style finery and wore an ivory cravat in his role as owner of the Tempus Fugit. (PROSE: The Crystal Bucephalus (novel))

The Sixth Doctor
Sixth Doctor
The Sixth Doctor wore long bow ties in a loose knot in the style of the First Doctor, but his became wider at the ends with diagonal edges. Additionally, rather than being plain they were either bright blue or red with polka dots, or yellow with a starfield pattern.

Early in his incarnation the Seventh Doctor wore the Sixth Doctor's crimson cravat before switching for a scarlet paisley tie, (TV: Time and the Rani (TV story) etc.) but later replaced it with a similar tie. (TV: Battlefield (TV story)) He wore a plain green cravat, (PROSE: White Darkness (novel)) which he replaced with ties done in rust orange, (PROSE: Legacy (novel)) ruby, (PROSE: {{cs|Sky Pirates! (PROSE: Original Sin (novel)) He eventually adopted a bronze brown tie with a black zig zag pattern,  (AUDIO: Dark Universe (audio story)-The Last Day (TV story)) and right up to his end. (TV: Doctor Who (TV story))

The Doctor deflected some oncoming criticism by saying, "Let me guess. My theories appall you, my heresies outrage you, I never answer letters, and you don't like my tie!" (DW: Ghost Light)
While in Perivale in 1883 at Gabriel Chase the Seventh Doctor deflected anticipated criticism from Ernest Matthews by saying, "Let me guess. My theories appal you, my heresies outrage you, I never answer letters, and you don't like my tie!" (TV: Ghost Light (TV story))

The Eighth Doctor
Eighth Doctor
The Eighth Doctor typically adopted a silky cravat, originating with the Wild Bill Hickok costume that he appropriated shortly after regeneration.

In 1930, when the Eighth Doctor was denied access to an area of the R101 airship, he protested, "I'm wearing a tie!" (AUDIO: Storm Warning (audio story))

The Ninth Doctor
At the end of his life, he had switched to a four-in-hand ascot tie which he wore under his white shirt's collar. He felt he had "moved on" from cravats. (AUDIO: Planet of the Ogrons (audio story)) He wore ascot ties in yellow, (COMIC: The Pictures of Josephine Day (comic story)) purple, (COMIC: A Matter of Life and Death (comic story)) dark teal, (COMIC: The Lost Dimension (comic story)) sapphire blue, (AUDIO: He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not (audio story)-Mutually Assured Destruction (audio story)) ebony black (AUDIO: Meanwhile, Elsewhere (audio story)-Previously, Next Time (audio story)) or midnight blue. (TV: The Night of the Doctor (TV story)) During the Last Great Time War, the manner in which he tied his ascot appeared hastily bundled on. (TV: The Night of the Doctor (TV story))
The Ninth Doctor went tieless. As he wore a leather jacket and a jumper, this was probably a wise fashion decision.

The Tenth Doctor
War Doctor
The Tenth Doctor usually wore four-in-hand ties of various patterns with his suits, but he also went open-collared sometimes. On formal occasions, like the presentation by Lazarus Laboratories or the party on the Titanic, he wore a bow tie. (DW: The Lazarus Experiment, Voyage of the Damned)
The War Doctor wore his predecessor's midnight blue ascot tie for some time. (TV: The Night of the Doctor (TV story), AUDIO: Light the Flame (audio story), WC: Doctors Assemble! (webcast)) But he mostly wore scarves as neckwear. (COMIC: The Clockwise War (comic story), AUDIO: Lion Hearts (audio story), PROSE: Engines of War (novel), TV: The Name of the Doctor (TV story), etc.)

Before they had met from her perspective, the Doctor got Martha Jones' attention in the street and dramatically took off his tie. He did this after they had met and experienced the story's events in his timeline, but before this in hers, as a "cheap trick" to prove he was telling the truth. (DW: Smith and Jones)
Ninth Doctor
(PROSE: Have You Seen This Man? (short story), TV: Rose (TV story)) Otherwise, this incarnation notably did not wear any neckwear with his usual attire; Hetty Warner noted this specifically and helped her identify him when she spotted the Doctor during the daytime. (AUDIO: The Oncoming Storm (audio story))

Tie

A tie was an article of clothing commonly associated with men's apparel on the planet Earth. Ties were worn for their style value, but could also signal levels of formality, association with particular schools, companies or other groups.[source needed]

The Doctor's ties[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Doctor regularly wore a tie of some form in most, though not all, of their incarnations.

First Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

The First Doctor almost always wore a wing collar with a navy blue ribbon bow tie. (TV: An Unearthly Child [+]Loading...["An Unearthly Child (TV story)"], The Daleks [+]Loading...["The Daleks (TV story)"], The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"]) On one occasion he wore an ascot tie that had a black-and-white checked pattern. (TV: The Rescue [+]Loading...["The Rescue (TV story)"], The Web Planet [+]Loading...["The Web Planet (TV story)"]) He also wore a black cravat up to his death. (TV: The Tenth Planet [+]Loading...["The Tenth Planet (TV story)"], Twice Upon a Time [+]Loading...["Twice Upon a Time (TV story)"])

Second Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Second Doctor typically wore a small, pre-tied bow tie, attached to his shirt with a safety pin. It performed the function of closing the top of his shirt, in place of a collar button. (TV: The Power of the Daleks [+]Loading...["The Power of the Daleks (TV story)"])

Third Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Third Doctor wore many ties. He often wore bow ties done in black, (TV: The Three Doctors [+]Loading...["The Three Doctors (TV story)"]) green, (TV: Planet of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Planet of the Daleks (TV story)"]) red, (TV: The Green Death [+]Loading...["The Green Death (TV story)"]) cyan, (TV: The Time Warrior [+]Loading...["The Time Warrior (TV story)"]) Prussian blue, (TV: Planet of the Spiders [+]Loading...["Planet of the Spiders (TV story)"]) or white. (PROSE: The Crystal Bucephalus [+]Loading...["The Crystal Bucephalus (novel)"])

Sixth Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Sixth Doctor wore long cravats in a basic bow form in the style of the First Doctor, but his became wider at the ends with diagonal edges. The Seventh Doctor's red tie. (PROSE: Original Sin [+]Loading...["Original Sin (novel)"])

Early in his incarnation the Seventh Doctor wore the Sixth Doctor's crimson cravat before switching for a scarlet paisley tie, (TV: Time and the Rani [+]Loading...["Time and the Rani (TV story)"] etc.) but later replaced it with a similar tie. (TV: Battlefield [+]Loading...["Battlefield (TV story)"]) He wore a plain green cravat, (PROSE: White Darkness [+]Loading...["White Darkness (novel)"]) which he replaced with ties done in rust orange, (PROSE: Legacy [+]Loading...["Legacy (novel)"]) ruby, (PROSE: Sky Pirates! (TV: Doctor Who [+]Loading...["Doctor Who (TV story)"])

While in Perivale in 1883 at Gabriel Chase the Seventh Doctor deflected anticipated criticism from Ernest Matthews by saying, "Let me guess. My theories appal you, my heresies outrage you, I never answer letters, and you don't like my tie!" (TV: Ghost Light [+]Loading...["Ghost Light (TV story)"])

Eighth Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

In 1930, when the Eighth Doctor was denied access to an area of the R101 airship, he protested, "I'm wearing a tie!" (AUDIO: Storm Warning [+]Loading...["Storm Warning (audio story)"])

At the end of his life, he had switched to a four-in-hand ascot tie which he wore under his white shirt's collar. He felt he had "moved on" from cravats.
