In the movie, fossil evidence established the "Gill-man" was a survivor of the Devonian Period when vertebrates began to occupy dry land. In Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, "The New Traveller's Almanac" talks about the discovery in 1930 (before the movie's events) of a female creature in the lagoon. The Almanac speculates that this is a hitherto unknown "Silurian throwback", the same error that named the Silurians.
