The mineralogist aboard Captain Maitland's ship, John was in a relationship with Carol Richmond and promised to marry her upon their return to Earth. He became aware of the presence of molybdenum on the Sense Sphere and excitedly thought about how a fleet of spaceships could transport the mineral home. This excitement broadcast his thoughts to the Sensorites, who used their powers to put Maitland and Carol to sleep.
