What I meant by the determination of the wiki is that there the title of the article is. Confirmed that. DWM 120, The Mysterious Planet (novelisation), Mindwarp (novelisation), Goth Opera and the cover copy on The Trial of a Time Lord DVDs all spell it as "Ravolox". I'll make this uniform across the wiki. -- Gousha talk to me 07:42, December 26, 2011 (UTC) |

I see a large number of cases where the planet Ravolox is alternately spelled Ravalox... even in the article itself. Do we have any significant proof of one over the other? Perhaps in the promo material, or the script, plus the novelisation.
If (as I suspect) both spellings have been used in official material, then a proper comment needs to be made in the article. But I'd like to confirm that first. -- Gousha talk to me 02:32, December 14, 2011 (UTC)
- The article name is Ravolox. That's the correct spelling. Boblipton talk to me 12:53, December 14, 2011 (UTC)
By what source? -- Gousha talk to me 18:12, December 14, 2011 (UTC)
By the determination of the wiki. The name of the article is the correct spelling. Anything below it may be a typo. Boblipton talk to me 02:46, December 15, 2011 (UTC)
- Except the wikia can't detemine it without a source. It hasn't been determined yet, hence the different spellings. Tardis1963 talk 03:02, December 15, 2011 (UTC)
- I think what Bob means by "the determination of the wiki" is this:
- It has generally been accepted that novelisations can be used for correct spelling, but that they are secondary sources. This means that if any original narrative -- be it TV, comic, novel whatever -- offers a spelling or fact that differs from the novelisation, the novelisation "loses". As far as I know, no primary source contradicts the Target book, so Ravolox it is.
- Relevant discussions on this policy include: Forum:Changing novelisation prefix and a question as to novelisation canonicity and tardis talk:canon policy#Novelisations, which is what actually resulted in the current revision of this issue in canon policy.

What I meant by the determination of the wiki is that there the title of the article is. Under the issue of pure logic, even if the the name is cited in every source as Ravalox and in the text, if the article's name is Ravolox, then that's what the article discusses. If the article was titled DOG and it talked about Ravalox or cats, it would be an article on dog(s), even if it were nonsense. If the article on Ravolox or Ravalox or Ravioli consisted purely of pied text, that's what the wiki has to say about the subject until someone makes a change.
The other issue is this: we are arguing about made-up names. There is no planet named Ravalox or Ravolox in any real world context and IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER what it is called. Well, it matters, but very very little and is way down on the to-do list. Make a decision, make the changes based on that decision and then bring it to the attention of people here.
Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Be willing to own up to them and fix them later, but if you wait for the Genius of the Great Consensus to make a decision, you'll wait an awfully long time. Boblipton talk to me 01:06, December 17, 2011 (UTC)
- I honestly have no idea what Bob is talking about.
- It absolutely matters what the title of the article is, because that name then gets linked elsewhere. A mistake in the name of an article easily gets multiplied as misspelt names get linked.
- We have simple rules in place to determine the proper name of just about any article. Those rules give the name, Ravolox, and the source us the novelisation because no primary narrative gives us another spelling. No "Great Consensus" is needed here; there's a simple, correct answer to the question of this thread.
- For what it's worth, the cover blurb for parts 1-4 of TV: The Trial of a Time Lord uses the "Ravolox" spelling. I can't be bothered to check the subtitles, but I'm sure they would be the same. Tardis1963 talk 07:57, December 17, 2011 (UTC)
- Tardis1963 is correct at the start of the thread, we need a source to determine the correct spelling of anything on this wiki.
- Boblipton, it does matter very much so. More than half of this wiki is based on in-universe information and it all needs to be sourced, whether it is "made up" as you put it or if it's a real world article. --Tangerineduel / talk 17:00, December 17, 2011 (UTC)
Confirmed that. DWM 120, The Mysterious Planet (novelisation), Mindwarp (novelisation), Goth Opera and the cover copy on The Trial of a Time Lord DVDs all spell it as "Ravolox". I'll make this uniform across the wiki. -- Gousha talk to me 07:42, December 26, 2011 (UTC)
