Vershinin was a Soviet soldier, second in command. He landed in Northumberland in a dinghie with a Russian Commando Unit led by Captain Sorin.
It was nearing the end of the Second World War when Vershinin's unit arrived at Maiden's Point. There, they met Commander Millington, who wanted them to steal the core of the Ultima Machine. Vershinin was amongst the soldiers who surrounded Ace and the Seventh Doctor after they were found by the body of another Russian soldier.
After an attack from the sea by a group of Haemovores, a desperate Millington shot Vershinin, but the latter survived by the hand of Captain Bates. Vershinin then shot and killed Millington. Bates helped Vershinin, and they became "comrades" against the "Curse of Fenric." (TV: The Curse of Fenric)
