Series 5, also known as Season 31 for clarity over Season 5, is scheduled for broadcast in 2010. It will be preceded by an "interim season" in 2009 which will consist of several specials, rather than a regular weekly series. (It remains to be seen, however, if these specials might come to be seen as an abbreviated 5th Series, which would make this season Series 6/Season 32.)
At of spring 2008 little has been announced regarding this future season, except for the following information:
- The BBC has commissioned it.
- Steven Moffat will take over as executive producer and head writer from Russell T. Davies
- Production is expected to begin in mid-2009.
Among information yet to be announced is whether David Tennant will return as The Doctor. It is strongly believed that he will return.
