The variables below are the ones used by the preloadable format, and therefore the ones most relevant to short stories.  Remember that not all variables will be used in every circumstance.  It's a ''Doctor Who'' short story, then the main characters are deemed to be the {{{doctor}}} and the {{{companions}}}.  In such an instance, you would not ''also'' use the {{{main character}}} variable.

When used for short stories, {{Infobox Story}} should contain the variables indicated below. Please use the preloadable format available in the "Standard preloads" dropdown menu when in editing mode.

Overview and examples

The variables below are the ones used by the preloadable format, and therefore the ones most relevant to short stories. Remember that not all variables will be used in every circumstance. It's a Doctor Who short story, then the main characters are deemed to be the {{{doctor}}} and the {{{companions}}}. In such an instance, you would not also use the {{{main character}}} variable.

Likewise, short stories would generally take the {{{anthology}}} variable. They would take {{{publication}}} variable when they are a short story in a non-anthological publication, such as DWM.

For instance, if the story in question were to be BE: Ships, then the template would be correctly filled as:

| anthology =
| publication = DWM 185
