Doctor Who television stories were novelised by a number of publishers before Target Books obtained the licence to publish the novelisations. Additionally, in the American market Pinnacle Books published some novelisations of Doctor Who television stories.
In the 1990s and 2000s several other novelisations, based on radio dramas, the 1996 TV movie, webcasts and direct-to-video stories were released. A novelisation of the unfinished TV story Shada was published in 2012.
