The term "brainy specs" was a nickname invented by the Tenth Doctor to describe glasses that the Fifth Doctor didn't "even need" but that "made him look a bit clever". He then admitting to using such faux glasses himself. (TV: Time Crash)
It was unknown whether the First Doctor's glasses were also "brainy specs", or if he actually had a genuine need for them.
