An energy weapon is a generic term used to describe any weapon that fires energy as opposed to percussive weapons that physical projectile.
Daleks that were present on Earth during the Shoreditch Incident were described by the Doctor to be using "phased energy weapon" or as Allison Williams clarified the statement a 'death ray'. (DW: Remembrance of the Daleks)
