[[Vandekirian]], Omega's assistant, was at least partly responsible for the sabotage. When he realized what he had done, his guilt caused him to cut his own hand to atone for his betrayal. Omega did not accept it, and cut his other hand, placing it in his [[stellar manipulator]], which was later to be known as the [[Hand of Omega]]. It was not known why Vandekirian betrayed Omega.
