Tarzan was a fictional character, the protagonist of Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs and numerous sequels. Formally known as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, he had been orphaned as a baby but brought up by apes, before returning to civilisation as an adult[source needed].
