David was a management consultant. He was married to Becky.
When they were teenagers, David and Becky were friends. They used to practise "snogging". Becky considered them just friends, but David considered Becky his girlfriend.
Becky was unhappy in her marriage to David, but he seemed unaware of this. He called her "Bex", which annoyed her because she suspected he only did so to save himself a syllable.
