A barkhan was, in the words of Susan Foreman, a "distinctive type of crescent-shaped Saharan sand dune". She was already familiar with the dune type from reading Lawrence of Arabia by the time her geography teacher Mr Grange made his Coal Hill School class draw diagrams of one on 29 March 1963.
