A web, also called a spider's web or cobweb, was a grid-like design created to trap things. Spiders created webs to catch prey, but the term was also applicable in relation to activities and shapes, as well as organizations or subjects that were wide spread.
The Animus was able to generate web and could also create web beings. (TV: The Web Planet, PROSE: Twilight of the Gods) Similarly, the Great Intelligence could create a substance akin to fungus or webbing and sough to envelope the Earth in its great web. (TV: The Web of Fear, HOMEVID: Downtime)
