Deletion
I agree that this needs to be deleted. The Silence is not a species, so no matter what way you look at this, the page title is incorrect. Unnamed species (The Impossible Astronaut) (just an example) would be more acceptable than The Silence (species). D0ct0r11 •
- I do think this needs to be deleted, but I think it needs to bee re-integrated into the article at the Silence. According to what we know, in-narrative, the Doctor and company did believe — just like we audience members — that the species encountered in DOM was called "the Silence". As things stand today in the broadcast order of DW, the term, The Silence is the mistaken name that the Doctor gave the species, and he was then corrected to understand that the Silence was a religious order. All of that should be on the same page until we get more details that will allow us to intelligently split things up.
czechout<staff /> ☎ ✍ 16:48:51 Mon 29 Aug 2011- I'm going to have to disagree with the deletion.
- Firstly, the Silence is a religious order, not the species, so information such as the fact they can influence people through post hypnotic suggestion, or create electricity, would be put in the biological/abilities section of a species article, and doesn't have a place on the religious order page. And it's our job to document these abilities.
- Secondly, we shouldn't delete this page just because we don't have a specific name for the species. If it was a minor character that only appeared in one episode, then yes I could see why it would be a hassle to create the page and come up with a name, but for this, it's a major species in series 6, and needs a page. If they had a name, then there would be absolutely no problem with this page existing. So just because we don't have a perfect name we don't have the page? That's a large hole in our policies then.
- To delete this page and move the information to the other page would mean adding information there that doesn't belong there, which isn't the correct place for it. If the name of the species is all that is stopping the article from existing then there is a large problem in our policies. Although, I do think The Silence (species) isn't the best suited name for the article. --The Thirteenth Doctor 22:33, August 29, 2011 (UTC)
- I think renaming would be a better option than deletion. I agree with The Thirteenth Doctor that the species should have a separate page from the religious order. I also agree with D0ct0r11 that The Silence (species) isn't the best name for the page. However, I think the page should remain as it is until we have a better name to give it.

- It should be called Silent. Both the credits and the action figure toys call a member of the species a "Silent". Tardis1963 23:24, August 29, 2011 (UTC)
- You could always just wait the final few weeks to see how things turn out before doing anything. I know there's policies to hold to, and all that jack, but all this will be rendered irrelevant in a few weeks. I would say the most prudent thing to do would be to just leave things as is for now and wait until it's all over.Meganerd18 08:45, August 30, 2011 (UTC)

- Well, precisely. That is the policy. That's why all this info should remain on The Silence, because in the narrative we have this species misidentified as "the Silence". The Doctor doesn't know any more than us.
czechout<staff /> ☎ ✍ 20:47:28 Tue 30 Aug 2011- No, but that's what I'm saying! The Silence is for the religious order, so nothing about this species' biology or abilities should be on that page, because that's to do with the species, not the religion. My point is that, if this species had a name on screen then there would be no problem with this page. I just find it rather absurd that we'd let this page, the only place where certain information can be recorded, be deleted just because we don't have an exact name. When there are named individuals of a species, such as Eve, then a species page isn't necessary since abilities and biology can be listed there. Not having this page would mean not listing abilities and biology, which is something we should be listing. --The Thirteenth Doctor 21:40, August 30, 2011 (UTC)
- Ok guys, this is absolutely ridiculous. This page should NOT be deleted. This species is credited as The Silent. Which incase you haven't made the connections sounds completely identical to The Silence. So how do we know that The Doctor and everyone wasn't saying "The Silents" and not "The Silence"? Because the Species is credited as "The Silent" So that's a big darn clue right there. This page should be renamed "The Silents" or "The Silent" because that's exactly what the species is credited as. Come on, people, does no one read the credits? It's named right there. Here's some proof for you guys:

- I propose this should not be deleted & renamed Unnamed Species (Silence) --SGCommand (Talk), 13:12,8/31/2011
- The species identifies itself as "The Silence" to The Doctor in "Day of the Moon" at Greystark Hall (Orphanage) Doctor asks "Okay. Who and what are you?" The Silence responds "Silence Doctor. We are the Silence" and as said above they are credited as "The Silent" and outside of the show writers have referred to them as the silence. Lord Rovien 05:04, September 7, 2011 (UTC)
I believe on the current evidence of the screenshot of the credits and the figurine line that they should be named 'The Silent' and that the page 'The Silence (Species)' should redirect to the page 'The Silent' if anyone decides to type in 'The Silence (Species)'. At the top of the page I think it should start with The Silent (also known as The Silence)... ect, ect, ect. Also at the top of 'The Silent' page you should put For the movement known as "The Silence", see The Silence. So then we will be using the name the show gave them and also sorting out any confusion issues.
- I think this page should be merged with The Silence page because it is like having two pages on the same thing compidokink
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
Yes! GO with the firsdt idea said on top. It makes a hell of a lot mroe sense
Renaming
This talk of deletion is stupid and unnecessary. From what we've seen of this UNNAMED SPECIES, it should have it's own page. I think the page should either be renamed to The Silence (Species), Unnamed Species (The Impossible Astronaut), or renamed The Silents.
This species deserves its own page. There are plenty of other pages for other species, and this one should not be deleted and added to The Silence page simply because this has the "wrong" name. (If you look on the official BBC website, it lists these as The Silence, there's a Monster Files for The Silence, and SM himself talks about when they were creating "THE SILENCE" (emphasis added). It says on the BBC page that the singular form is "Silent", so I recommend a rename instead of a deletion, until their actual name is provided.
It should be pointed out that the religious order aren't the ones who make people forget once they look away, aren't a species of parasites who control through post-hypnotic suggestion, and so far as we know can't draw power from their surrounding environment.
So, rename the page. You can debate over what to call it and just give a bunch of redirects, but rename the page, omit the words "silence" if you have to, and move on! Arguing over it is childish, and deleting it just cos the name is wrong would be a stupid thing to do.

Created section 'merging' and ideas therein.
Merging
I propose that we merge the two pages together, with the species from The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon put under the heading 'followers', calling their sub-heading 'Species Calling Themselves 'Silent', or something similar.
Whenever anybody tries to go to the original 'Silence (species)' page, they'll be redirected to the that sub-heading.

I've changed the title on the infobox to Unnamed Species (Silence Religion). Can someone who can please change the title to this.
Hold on, according to DWM, the species is named "the Silents", while the relgion is called "the Silence". Since it's an official publication, shouldn't we go with that naming system, or at least for the moment? D0ct0r11 • 20:44: Sat 9 Sep 2011
me too
i think it would be better renamed to: silence (religon). Metardis 13:21, September 26, 2011 (UTC)
No, the relgion should be called the Silence, as it is, while the species should be named the Silents. D0ct0r11 • 17:18: Mon 9 Sep 2011
Inspired by the Slenderman?
Don't they look like the Slenderman and Endermen?
RENAME
I have renamed this page because on the OFFICIAL website, on action figures, in the OFFICIAL Doctor Who Magazine, credits in EPISODES, and so on, individuals have been noted as being a Silent. They are the leaders of the religious movement the Silence (as stated in The Wedding of River Song), and it can be logically assumed that the order is named after the species. However, it is more than likely the order is The Silence while the species is the Silents. Unless Steven Moffat himself gives them another name or says that they are not called the Silents (which he has stated on numerous occassions), this page should not be renamed again. It should be kept as is unless proven false.
Kind of an FYI
I took the liberty of editing in a little bit of information about a fact of the Silents that seemed to be forgotten: they're parasites. They can't develop technology themselves, they need others to do it for them. So I added in a few lines about that, and one about the similarity to the Eternals (which is an obvious one, not saying there's a relation, just that it's a similar concept). If anybody wants to integrate that aspect into the article more then go ahead. 74.14.130.191 15:31, December 2, 2011 (UTC)
Remembering previous encounters
It's clear that seing a silent makes you remember previous encounters. However, if the it was the same for the images, then noone would need those fancy eyedrives, only a hologram of a silent projected in front of your eyes. Should something be added about this, or is it to speculative?Thomsons Gazelle ☎ 22:13, November 11, 2012 (UTC)
It's Silence, not Silents.
- Collectively, they're called the Silence. Referring to an individual member, a Silent. Referring to a couple of them, or a small group, Silents. TARDIStraveler ☎ 14:11, April 24, 2013 (UTC)
um what would happen if a Silent looks away from a Weeping Angel
Ummm...why is there a picture of what appears to be a wall of a spaceship or something? That's hardly relevant to this article. LogiCat ☎ 22:04, August 15, 2013 (UTC)
- Talk pages are for discussing the editing of articles, not for making jokes. Please read Tardis:Discussion policy. Shambala108 ☎ 23:35, August 15, 2013 (UTC)
I have no idea what you are talking about. Please do not direct me to rules pages for expressing legitimate concerns. Way to be welcoming to new members, jerk. LogiCat ☎ 23:51, August 15, 2013 (UTC)
- I found no picture such as you described. If you can be more specific about the offending picture, then I will apologize for the assumption. Shambala108 ☎ 23:56, August 15, 2013 (UTC)
- The only thing I would like an apology for is the less-than-warm welcome. I was a member for not even two hours before my first contact with another member, and what did they give me? A slap on the wrist. This wikia has now been added to my list of communities that I do not wish to be a part of. The appropriate response to a brand-spankin'-new member making a joke would be something more along the lines of this:
- "Haha, I see what you did there! Unfortunately, talk pages are actually intended for the discussion of page edits, rather than general discussion about the topic of the page. If I might recommend a place that suits your needs, Gallifrey Base is an excellent forum to discuss the show with fellow Whovians. If you would like to know more about what is allowed in talk pages and other pages of the wiki, feel free to take a look at Tardis:Discussion policy. This is a great place to share your love of Doctor Who once you are familiar with how things work around here. At any rate, welcome! I hope you enjoy your stay!"
- Alternatively, you could have just let it slide, recognizing that a joke or two on a talk page isn't going to send the entire site to hell. Maybe just send a private message to me (or whoever is the new member in question), saying things like I exampled above.
