According to Jack Stimson's records, Mathilda met with Gerald Gardner "shortly before his death". This fact was just one of what he called the "right credentials" to be a kindred spirit — or, as Jessica Willamy put it, a "one of us" — in the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Behind the scenes

Unremarked by Wonderland was the fact that Gardner was a leading member of the English Wiccan movement, who died in 1964.
