Inspector Gascoigne was a police detective investigating Chameleon Tours on behalf of Samantha Briggs, whose brother had disappeared on a Chameleon Tours holiday to Rome. The Chameleon who took over Spencer's identity shot and killed Gascoigne for getting too close to the truth. Polly witnessed the murder and informed the Second Doctor.
