Simon was a survivor after an alien invasion of the 22nd century. The TARDIS was stuck there, and he used it as a base. The army left him behind accidentally when evacuating everyone. After the invasion and the clearance of people, wolves arrived. When he arrived back to base after being chased by wolves, he used the telepathic circuits (accidentally) and landed around the Twelfth Doctor and Clara, who got him to his mum and dad.
