Joan was a Bane that disguised herself as a human. She was a member of the Bane Kindred and attempted to eat Mrs. Wormwood alive because her mission to invade Earth had failed.(TV: Enemy of the Bane)
In 2008, Joan visited Andrea Yates along with Dan. She took part in one of Andrea Yates's parties. (TV: Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?)
A year later, she knocked on the door of Sarah Jane Smith's house, where Mrs. Wormwood was hiding. Clyde Langer opened the door. Joan seemed to be a volunteer worker for Gaab. However, she was a Bane and used her image translator to appear as a human. She was one of the Bane who were sent to kill Mrs. Wormwood and eat her alive, because the invasion of Earth with Bubble Shock had been a failure. She tried to get inside the house, but Clyde Langer, Mrs Wormwood and Luke Smith got away. Joan was killed by Kaagh with a Sontaran blaster before she could harm Mrs. Wormwood.
