Lancaster Bomber

The Avro Lancaster was a bomber craft used in World War II by RAF Bomber Command. Reg Arwell flew one during the conflict, when it was seriously damaged by Axis anti-aircraft. (TV: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe)

Behind the scenes

This story depicts Lancasters carrying out a bombing mission in December 1941. Although Lancasters had entered RAF service in September 1941, their first operational mission was a mine laying sortie in the Heligoland Blight, carried out by aircraft from 41 Squadron on March 3 1942.
