West Indies

The West Indies were, at least in 1746, British colonies. The English solicitor Grey led a scheme in that year to transplant Scots there under the false impression that they would be able to work off their passage after seven years of labour. In fact, the Scots were really being made slaves to work plantations there. Had not the Second Doctor intervened, Jamie McCrimmon and Ben Jackson would have both ended up in the West Indies as slaves. (TV: The Highlanders)

In the 20th century, Jamaica was a sovereign nation that was previously a part of the West Indies. (AUDIO: An Ordinary Life)
