Professor Yana appeared to be a Human scientist, who was in reality an incarnation of the renegade Time Lord known as the Master.

Origins
- The circumstances of the transformation of Master from Time Lord into Yana remain unknown, though, as he had the same kind of fob watch, he had presumably a chameleon arch as the Doctor had done to change himself into John Smith. Based on the Master's statements, he must have gone through the transformation during the Last Great Time War. Therefore, when the Doctor found himself the only Time Lord to survive the war, he could not sense any other Time Lords in his mind.
