Benjamin Jackson wanted to work for P. T. Barnum's circus. He was in St Thomas, Canada when the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith visited in 1885.
When he saw the Doctor's TARDIS appear out of thin air, he wanted to obtain it for the circus. He stole the TARDIS key from the Doctor and broke into the TARDIS.
