When The Doctor entered the cockpit after the vehicle stopped, he convinced Joe and Claude to lift the shield for a moment to see what Midnight looked like, so they opened the shields to look outside. As the radiation went up to a lethal level, Joe decided to shut them down again. The same moment, Claude saw something, describing it as a "Shadow", running towards their shuttle, but Joe dismissed his claim.
