Rupesh Patanjali was a doctor, originally from the Midlands, who worked at the A&E department at St Helen's Hospital in Cardiff. Jack and Ianto encounter him while they removed an alien Hitchhiker from within a patient. His interest in Torchwood piqued. Rupesh tracked Torchwood down to the Bay and Gwen talked with him at length.

BBC promotional materials and early in the episode itself it looked as if he was going to join the team as a replacement doctor role since the death of Owen Harper in a similar way to Suzie Costello. However he turned out to be in league with the government and shot Jack Harkness so he could be restrained and have a bomb planted inside him. He was later shot by Agent Johnson in the back while trying to escape. His original plan was as to be planted as an MI5 infiltrator, to be hired and to get information on Torchwood from the inside. After Bridget Spears placed the hit on Jack's life however, his mission was changed.
