Hofburg Palace

Hofburg Palace - sometimes just called Hofburg - was the Austrian royal residence. It was situated on the Ringstrasse in the city of Vienna and was a popular tourist attractions. (AUDIO: The Silver Turk)

It was near Michaelerplatz and had baroque architecture. (AUDIO: Quicksilver)

The name "Hofburg" was also used figuratively to refer to the royal family itself. (AUDIO: The Silver Turk)

History

In the 19th century, it was the home of Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Sisi.

On 12 September 1873, Sisi invited Alfred Stahlbaum to give a performance of the Silver Turk at the Hofburg. However, his cab crashed with another at the turn for the Hofburg, and the performance did not happen. (AUDIO: The Silver Turk)

Although much of Vienna was destroyed by Allied Forces during World War II, the palace remained unharmed.

In 1948, the Sixth Doctor parked his TARDIS behind the Hofburg. (AUDIO: Quicksilver)
