Thompson was a student at Arkwood School. Known to be meek and mild-mannered, he was the first human victim of a drug created by Cedric Mathews which would cause peaceful individuals to become rabid. Thompson quickly fell into the trap of the substance, attacking his fellow students and destroying school property. The Third Doctor and the Brigadier arrived and tried to stop the rest of the school from being contaminated, but they were too late to stop the full infestation.
