The Tyrenians were a species created by Stewart Ransom's colleague Gustav Tyren. They were humans with canine features, bioengineered to be supersoldiers.

When funding was ended and the Federation made genetic engineering illegal, Ransom got them to steal a ship so they could escape. However, their ship crashed on Axista Four, where the Tyrenians remained in suspended animation for a century. In the meantime, humans established a colony on the planet. The Second Doctor discovered their true origins, but told authorities they were refugees from a plague so they would not be killed. (PROSE: The Colony of Lies)
