Robinson was one of the people selected by Sir Charles Grover to colonise New Earth. He had resigned from his job, and had even sold his house.

Behind the scenes
Robinson's name is never given in Malcolm Hulke's novelisation of the story, but he is given the former occupation of bank manager. This was not derived from any information given in the televised version.
