The Canary Islands were an archipelago of islands located in the Atlantic Ocean. Lanzarote was one of the islands. (TV: Planet of Fire; PROSE: Blue Box, Synthespians™)
Behind the scenes
The islands have served as filming locations for Doctor Who on several occasions, initially for 1984's Planet of Fire, Lanzarote doubled as itself and the alien world of Sarn.
The islands were used again in 2014 for the episode Kill the Moon, in which its desert landscape was used to depict the lunar surface.
Series 9, filmed in 2015, had five episodes with scenes filmed in the Canary Islands, the most overseas shooting at this point in the show's history. Tenerife doubled as a Spanish town and the alien planet of Skaro in The Magician's Apprentice / The Witch's Familiar, and Fuerteventura was used to depict New Mexico in The Zygon Invasion and the planet Gallifrey in Heaven Sent and Hell Bent.
