Christopher Ryan appeared in several Doctor Who television stories: as Lord Kiv in Mindwarp, General Staal in The Sontaran Stratagem and The Poison Sky and Commander Stark in The Pandorica Opens. He also voiced General Stenk and Flitch in the Big Finish Doctor Who audio story The Sontaran Ordeal.

A promotional image of him as General Staal was used to depict Commander Halke in the Doctor Who story The God Complex and Major Stenx on the cover of the New Series Adventures novel The Sontaran Games. Archive imagery of Ryan was also used to depict a Sontaran resident of the trap street in Face the Raven.

Outside of Doctor Who, he is best known as Mike Thecoolperson in The Young Ones and Dave Hedgehog in Bottom.
