It is illegal to post online a BBC-produced video that you modified to suit your needs, for instance, with added subtitles in another language. If you require a translation, the only advice allowable on this wiki is to contact a BBC distributing partner in your country and obtain fully licensed releases with all translations from them.

Hi and thank you for moderating this Fandom, I really appreciate your hard work and I'm sorry if I did something to increase your hard work instead of making it easier.

In my defense, I can say I don't want to create or post new videos: I'm talking about offering a service that is fully legal. All YT videos have the option that let you add subtitles for free without doing anything against the owners: in fact each subtitle is moderated and checked before the final approvation.

I warmly invite you to check for yourself, because I do understand is my word against yours.

I for myself don't approve copyright violations, and I wouldn't post it if I was sure it was illegal.

Again, it's just my word, and I see it's not much since the moment we're stranger to each other.

That's all, I think I'll send you my further ideas before post them in order to avoid those nasty events.

Hi, glad you understand the concern. Even more glad to learn that you intended it in a fully legal way. However, it is my experience that commercial products such as Doctor Who are rarely liable for such community service. For instance, there was a case when Big Finish asked to remove free online transcripts of their Doctor Who stories.

To be honest, I can hardly blame them. DWU is an immensely complex world with references both to the 50+ years of DW stories and to thousands of years of history and culture. I started editing on this wiki when I found Sisi, the Empress of Austria spelled "Cissy". It is very easy to get things wrong in doing such a translation. When you do it for your brother at home, it's commendable. But to add such a translation to an official BBC video published on their YouTube channel would require them to expend unreasonable amount of resources, including a native speaker in each language who is simultaneously an expert in Doctor Who. They certainly don't have this kind of manpower, and the overseers of the YouTube channel are not likely to be in the position to authorise new hires for this purpose. Which is why I was not surprised at all to see the following note on a randomly chosen BBC video.

I wouldn't be surprised if there exist videos where this option is not turned off. But I would not take it as a sign it would be approved or that it would be legal in case it is approved. Copyright is a notoriously difficult subject. British copyright has its peculiarities. For instance, authors often retain copyright for characters created by them. If you look at the packaging for any product involving Daleks or Cybermen, you will see what I mean. Thus, I honestly have no idea whether legally you would require a permission from the Terry Nation Estate to make modifications to a video involving Daleks or from the Mervyn Haisman estate for a story involving the Brigadier.

Thus, given the legal minefield, we would prefer not to involve the wiki in any such activities. After all, the goal of the wiki is to record and classify existing content, not to create new one.

I understand your intents were noble and apologise for misinterpreting your Discussions post. But it will remain deleted.

To answer your other question, it is recommended to respond on the talk page of the other person to ensure they are notified of the response by email. You cannot expect other users, especially admin, to follow your talk page.
