Monopticons were android spheres used by Monarch aboard his ship as security cameras.
The monopticons were all connected by a control computer that followed Monarch's orders. When the Fifth Doctor began a revolution, he sent the monopticons into a disabled, spinning mode with his sonic screwdriver, thus preventing Monarch from watching him. (TV: Four to Doomsday)
