Transporters were teleportation devices similar to transmats used for instantaneous transport by the United Federation of Planets in a parallel universe. Transporters were used in Federation facilities as well as the vessels of their Starfleet. Transport was initiated by the vocal command "energize". (COMIC: Assimilation²)
History
The unique radiation of the planet Aprilia III prevented use of USS Enterprise's transporter, forcing Captain James T. Kirk to use the shuttlecraft Galileo to visit the planet.
When Delta IV was invaded by the Borg-Cyberman Fleet, the Deltan Prime Minister was, despite her protests, taken to a transporter where she and her entourage were transported safely to the secure command center. (COMIC: Assimilation²)
