Biography

Professor Malcolm Taylor was one of UNIT's foremost scientific advisors. He was a Welshman and had read all UNIT files on the Doctor, who he idolised. He preceded the Doctor in working out how to close the wormhole created by The Swarm, leading the Doctor to describe him as "brilliant" and his "new best friend."  After Malcolm figured out how to close the wormhole, Captain Erisa Magambo ordered him to proceed to protect the Earth, despite the fact the Doctor and the passengers of Bus 200 were still trapped on the other side.  Morally outraged at the idea of abandoning the Doctor, who had saved humanity countless times before, Malcolm refused to follow her order so they could allow the Doctor to get back to earth.  Drawing her gun on him, Magambo once again ordered him to close the wormhole.  In spite of his fear, Malcolm passionately refused to close the wormhole, surprising even Magambo.  Once the Doctor and the passengers safely made their way through the wormhole, the tense exchange was defused. The Doctor called Malcolm to get him to close the wormhole, and in Malcolm's excitement he repeatedly hung up on the Doctor, surprising him greatly. On the Doctor's orders Malcolm proceeded to close the wormhole just ahead of the main swarm.  However three Swarm creatures had already come through, but were quickly shot down by the combined UNIT forces stationed at the wormhole entrance.  After Malcolm met the Doctor for the first time in person, he hugged him and repeatedly proclaimed"I love you!" to the Doctor. The Doctor, bemused by the entire situation, pointed to Malcolm affectionately as he walked away.

Professor Taylor made his own forms of measurements, including:

  • Malcolms - He described one Malcolm as a wavelength parcel of ten KHz operating in 4 dimensions equals one malcolm. He came up with the idea to name a form of measurement after himself from James Watt, saying "it didn't do him any harm."
  • Bernards - One bernard (named for the rocket scientist Bernard Quatermass) is said to be one hundred malcolms. (DW: Planet Of The Dead)
