"Professor" Erasmus Pink was a man who claimed he planned to split the Earth open by breaking through the thinnest part of the planet's crust with a giant drill. Pink was intoxicated and singing at the time of making the claim, did not have a giant drill, and was not really a professor. (TV: The Great Detective)

Following the loss of his companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams (TV:The Angels Take Manhattan) the Eleventh Doctor retired to London in 1892. (TV: The Snowmen) In an attempt to coax him out of retirement, Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax approached the Doctor and told him of several unexplained incidents that he could help them investigate. Jenny suggested they look into Pink's claims and said it was never too early to investigate a drill, despite the fact that Pink was drunk and had no drill. (TV: The Great Detective)
