In January 1982, England engaged India in three cricket test matches, held in Calcutta, Chennai and Kanpur. More specifically, this fifth match of the season took place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India, which is on the coast off the Bay of Bengal. The city was officially known as Madras in 1982, when this took place.
