Mini-episodes were short episodes of Doctor Who usually released online, in a DVD set or broadcast during charity telethons such as Children in Need and Comic Relief.
The first mini-episode as such was broadcast during Disney Time in 1975.
The Sarah Jane Adventures was also granted minisodes, making it the only spin-off to do so.

The Collection mini-episodes
The term of "mini-episodes" was also used by Pete McTighe in DWM 571 to refer to the short live-action Doctor Who stories whose creation he oversaw to accompany trailers for The Collection, noting that "calling them trailers feels a bit reductive". Some of these shorts broke the fourth wall while others were set in the Doctor Who universe. Contrary to traditional mini-episodes, these naturally did not tie in with the then-current season of Doctor Who on TV, but rather caught up with some element of the season being released in a Collection box-set at the time of release of the mini-episode.
