Archaeology was the scientific discipline of excavating, studying and learning from the past.

The Doctor's companion, Peri had at least a passing interest in archaeology (DW: Planet of Fire) Another, Bernice Summerfield was, by trade, an archaeologist, before she met him and a supposed degree qualifying her as a professor in it, though, not, in fact, an official one (NA: Love and War). Bernice specialized in archaeological studies after they parted.
