Edinburgh town walls

The town of Edinburgh was surrounded by walls, one of which was known as the Telfer Wall.

By 1645, locations within the walls included Edinburgh High Street, the Heart of Midlothian and St Giles' Cathedral. Leith was located outside the walls.

In 1645, when the town was placed under quarantine to stop the spread of the bubonic plague, the walls helped to protect the town. With all gates guarded, the Bailey of the Muir believed that the Twelfth Doctor, Bill Potts and Nardole had snuck in over the wall. Agnes later commented that if they hadn't closed the gates, half of Leith would have been bringing the plague into the town. (PROSE: Plague City)
