The First Doctor was once put on trial on Venus circa 3 billion BC after he was accused of plotting to destroy all life on Venus. The trial took place in the Chamber of the Night Council in the city of Bikugih and was conducted by Presidor Kintibi Jofghil.

History

Origins

Venus during this time was a dying planet, suffering under the increasing heat of its sun which was slowly killing the population of Venusians. Shortly before the trial, the Sou(ou)shi had arrived, promising to save the Venusians by taking them to Sol III.

The Doctor had arrived on the planet the previous evening to attend the funeral of his old friend Jikugihi Dharkhig, spending most of his time in the company of another of his friends, Jilet Mrak-ecado, philosopher of Bikugih. When the Sou(ou)shi ship arrived, the Doctor was quick to doubt whether their motives were really so pure, and his expression of these doubts angered many Venusians, including Presidor Jofghil.

Elsewhere on the planet, the last of the Cracdhalltari Afhighid Kontojij foretold the death of many Venusians using his people's ancient art of huyaot, sending out many message by ghifghoni. One of these messages arrived in the hands of Mrak-ecado.

With some prompting from the Sou(ou)shi, Presidor Jofghil ordered the killing of the First Doctor as he made his way to Bikugih from Sisikhigu’s Beach, ordering Lighibu to do the deed. Lighibu intercepted the Doctor, however before she could kill him, Mrak-ecado arrived on the scene, insisting that he be given a fair trial. (PROSE: Venusian Lullaby)

The trial

The trial itself took place that very day, headed by Presidor Jofghil with Mrak-ecado also present. Jofghil read the following opening statement:

Alien known as the Doctor, you are accused of plotting to destroy all civilized life on Venus, possibly by means of sabotaging the ship belonging to the alien people known as the Sou(ou)shi, possibly by other means. There is evidence against you from Jilet Mrak-ecado of the clan Poroghini, Member of this Night Council, and from the aliens known as the Sou(ou)shi. Do you accept this Accusation or do you wish to question it?Kintibi Jofghil

With the Doctor questioning the accusation, Jofghil relayed the evidence presented by the Sou(ou)shi regarding his supposed attempts to "set a destructive force" in place aboard the ship. The Doctor merely responded that the Sou(ou)shi were trying to mislead the Venusians.

Next, Mrak-ecado presented his evidence, detailing the description of Kontojij's message, and how it detailed the deaths of Venusians as well as "a blue box with flashing light on the top", which was blamed for producing the force that was killing the Venusians. After handing the Doctor the letter to examine, the Doctor dubbed it another Sou(ou)shi trick, before accepting the evidence.

The verdict was eventually given, with the majority of councillors raising all five arms to agree that the accusation was true (although some only raised three or four), and the Doctor was sentenced to death. (PROSE: Venusian Lullaby)

The decision of the Council is clear. The alien known as the Doctor is likely to carry out the actions described in the Accusation. For the safety of the people of Bikugih, and that of all other Venusians, it is necessary to prevent this. The alien has exceptional psi-power, this much is clear; and, if his escape from the Sou(ou)shi ship is to be taken as evidence, he seems to be capable of extraordinary manipulations of the physical world, almost amounting to magic. Therefore I feel, as I have felt from the beginning, that the only way to prevent him from killing all of us is to kill himKintibi Jofghil

Aftermath

The Doctor was escorted by Legdhitreb Brignontojij and his squad to be executed. He was saved from this fate by his previous attempted-assassin, Lighibu, who had realised his innocence on her previous encounter with the alien. She and her squad of five helped him to safety, bringing him to his TARDIS, but were killed before they themselves could enter it.

Meanwhile, a second of Kontojij letters was brought forth, carried by Ian Chesterton from the Volcano People headquarters. Shockingly, this letter was more complete than that letter provided by Mrak-ecado, revealing that the Sou(ou)shi planned to kill them all and drink their minds. Mrak-ecado then revealed that it was he that had invited the Sou(ou)shi and given them permission, as he knew that way they would all be remembered. Mrak-ecado then summoned the Sou(ou)shi to their meeting place, who killed the two Venusians, with Ian escaping.

I gave them permission because they will remember us for ever. I have said they are not evil. They will do as they have promised. They will take us to another world: the world of memories – the world that we all go to in the end. And we will stay there, not die when this world dies.Jilet Mrak-ecado

Eventually the Sou(ou)shi were stopped when the Volcano People, with assistance from Ian Chesterton, induced a volcanic eruption, destroying the Sou(ou)shi ship, saving Venusian society for what they estimated would be another 5000 years at least. (PROSE: Venusian Lullaby)
