Derek Francis (7 November 1923-27 March 1984[1]) played Nero in the Doctor Who television story The Romans.
He was the first major actor to ask to be on the show and through his connection with Jacqueline Hill's husband Alvin Rakoff, soon secured the role. Although it has been stated that William Hartnell was overjoyed to work with him again, having previously worked with him in the Carry On series, Derek Francis was not in any Carry On film until 1967 and certainly not in Carry On Sergeant, the only one featuring William Hartnell.[source needed]
