Rheon carbines, also known as swagger sticks, (AUDIO: Starlight Robbery) were the standard Sontaran side-arm from at least 1985. (PROSE: The Two Doctors) They were wand-like weapons that emitted charged particles to kill their enemies. The weapon also had some capacity to penetrate armour. The carbine could be set to stun as well as kill. A safety catch was set into the butt of the weapon to prevent the carbine from being accidentally discharged. The Rutan Host could resist the effects of a single weapon's fire for a certain amount of time, but multiple bursts would defeat the Rutan's defences. (PROSE: Lords of the Storm, PROSE: Shakedown)
