The version of Romana from an alternate Gallifrey who never travelled with the Doctor had a mother. When Irving Braxiatel introduced Romana, who was using the alias Lady Astra, to her alternate self, he claimed that "Astra" was her fifteenth cousin on her mother's side. The other Romana outwardly accepted the lie. In reality, she immediately knew it to be false because she did not have a "fifteenth cousin on her mother's side" and instinctually recognised "herself".
