A spacecraft, or spaceship, was a transportation vessel designed to operate in the vacuum of space, capable of moving objects or passengers between planets, galaxies and, for species with the adequate technology, the other side of the universe.
These ranged from rockets to launch artificial satellites into planetary orbit (TV: Delta and the Bannermen, PROSE: Alien Bodies) to interstellar spacecraft, also known as starships, capable of reaching the edge of the universe. (COMIC: Voyage to the Edge of the Universe)
They could be made from any number of materials, such as plastic, ceramic or metal. (TV: The Hand of Fear)
There were various types of spacecraft, including, but not limited to flying saucers, rockets, space probes and shuttlecrafts. (TV: The Pandorica Opens)
Historians from an era that succeeded the Siege of Trenzalore believed that 238,000 individual spacecraft had participated in the conflict. (PROSE: Dalek: The Astounding Untold History of the Greatest Enemies of the Universe)
By species
Spacecraft were used by numerous species including Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, Terileptils, Raxacoricofallapatorians, Chelonians, Nestenes, Adipose, Drahvins, Sycorax, Haemogoth, Zygons, Atraxi, Draconians (TV: The Pandorica Opens) and Silurians. (TV: Dinosaurs on a Spaceship)
References
Culture
Jane's Spacecraft of the Universe was a reference book mentioned by the Fourth Doctor. (TV: Destiny of the Daleks)
Jane's Spaceships was a reference book in the TARDIS library. Sam Jones read it whilst travelling with the Eighth Doctor. (PROSE: War of the Daleks)
George Thompson liked spaceships. He wrote about this in his special book. (PROSE: My Special Book)
