According to one account, in his original incarnation, the Time Lord who would later become the War Chief attended the Prydonian Academy as part of the Deca, under the name of Magnus. Other members included Theta Sigma, later the Doctor, and Koschei, later the Master, (PROSE: Divided Loyalties) in contrast to accounts suggesting the War Chief and the Master were incarnations of the same Time Lord. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Doomsday Weapon, etc.)

A Magnus not in his first incarnation was documented in other account as an old friends of the First Doctor's with whom he had a falling-out prior to their leaving Gallifrey, (COMIC: Flashback) and who wasted his regenerations too quickly. (PROSE: Invasion of the Cat-People)
