Plot
The Eleventh Doctor and Alice Obiefune are menaced by the inhabitants of the British colony Britzit-247 after stealing John Jones' last ever album. Attempting to make their escape in Bessie 2, they are intercepted by a giant robot before being rescued by the TARDIS after driving headfirst into a molten lava version of the River Thames.
Once safely back in the TARDIS the Doctor navigates to the secret coordinates Jones left for him inside the album - which were found by playing his song Whitestar backwards. Following the location, the Doctor and Alice arrive at Jones' funeral where they are greeted by a Cwrier who presents the Doctor with a letter from "lifeform unknown". Initially Alice is upset by the Doctor's apparent lack of care for Jones' death, but on reflection she comes to the conclusion that he sees death differently due to his advanced years and access to time travel.
The Doctor and Alice head to another planet and are followed by a Silent who they are unable to remember. The Doctor recalls that he visited the planet one year earlier and that its entire ecosystem has changed rapidly. The pair encounter a dead Nebulon, who the Doctor notes has had his life force drained, and they immediately come across a dead Rockra under the same circumstances too. Coming across a strange machine, their interaction with it causes it to latch onto them, visibly draining their life energies as the Silent emerges, its plan put into motion...
Characters
Worldbuilding
- The Doctor and Alice attend John Jones' funeral.
- The coordinates and timedates for Jones' funeral could be found when playing Whitestar backwards.
Notes
- While intending to visit John Jones, the Doctor and Alice ended up in his funeral. This story was released one day after the first anniversary of the death David Bowie, who was the inspiration for John Jones' character.
- Whitestar is a reference to David Bowie's song "Black Star". It was also the name of his final album.
- The word 'Britzit' used by the colonists who broke off from the main colonies to create their own world is most likely a play on the word "Brexit", which was the name of the 2016 movement for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union. Britzit-247 is populated by a giant robot that resembles Boris Johnson and a group of individuals who all resemble Nigel Farage.
- The working title for this story was New Beginnings.[1]
